Everyone needs to use mathematics in their everyday life, in education and in future employment.

Mathematics is taught at three main levels in Junior Secondary which flow into the Mathematics Subjects available in Senior. The maths pathways diagram displays the subjects and movements possible between these subjects.

## Junior Secondary Mathematics - Year 7 to 9

There is a major focus on numeracy in the Junior Secondary program. Some of these practical numeracy units include: measurement of area, total surface area and volume; financial mathematics; rates, ratio and proportion; probability and statistics. As students move through their Junior Secondary years, their interests, abilities and vocational preferences will begin to lead them towards different pathways in mathematics. For this reason, while we continue to focus on developing numeracy skills; as students progress we also begin to develop the mathematical thinking which will lead to the pure and applied mathematics necessary for future study in mathematical fields. The majority of students study Core Mathematics in Junior Secondary.

### Extension Math

Extension classes are offered for students who enjoy mathematics and have shown ability in the area. These classes compact the set curriculum, covering it at a faster pace. The remaining time is invested in enrichment activities which may include investigations spanning across mathematical content areas, problem solving, the history of mathematics, or proofs of formulae.

### Foundation Math

Students who are experiencing significant difficulty with Core Mathematics may be offered the opportunity to study mathematics at Foundation level. These smaller classes study the life-related content at their Year level and back-track to previous years to develop numeracy skills.

## Senior Secondary Mathematics - Year 10 - 12

### Year 10

For year ten, students need to choose the course which best suits their ability and future aspirations. Students who have achieved good results are encouraged to select the advanced course which we have named "Extension Mathematics". This course is a preparation year for Senior Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics. Alternatively, students may continue to study the Year 10 Core Math course which leads towards General Mathematics or Essential Mathematics. Students who have been in the Foundation Mathematics Course may continue this level in Year 10.

### Year 11 and 12

#### General Mathematics – General Subject

General Mathematics' major domains are Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, Statistics and Networks and Matrices. General Mathematics is designed for students who want to extend their mathematical skills beyond Year 10 but whose future studies or employment pathways do not require calculus. A course of study in General Mathematics can establish a basis for further education and employment in the fields of business, commerce, education, finance, social science and the arts.

#### Mathematical Methods – General Subject

Mathematical Methods' major domains are Algebra, Functions, Relations and their graphs, Calculus and Statistics. This course can establish a basis for further education and employment in the fields of science, all branches of mathematics and statistics, computer science, medicine, engineering, finance and economics.

#### Specialist Mathematics – General Subject

Specialist Mathematics' major domains are Vectors and Matrices, Real and Complex Numbers, Trigonometry, Statistics and Calculus. Specialist Mathematics can establish a basis for further education and employment in the fields of mathematics and statistics, computer science, engineering and economics. Specialist Mathematics is to be undertaken in conjunction with, or on completion of, Mathematical Methods.

#### Essential Mathematics – Applied Subject

Essential Mathematics' major domains are Number, Data, Location and Time, Measurement and Finance. Essential Mathematics benefits students because they develop skills that go beyond the traditional ideas of numeracy. A course of study in Essential Mathematics can establish a basis for further education and employment in the fields of trade, industry, business and community services.

All student learning materials for Mathematics can be accessed via our elearning portal. Students need to enter their school login and password as this is a secure learning environment. Once logged in, students select the Ferny Grove SHS Mathematics Department link on the Learning Place.

**Support**

Maths tutoring is held every Monday from 3:10pm to 4:10pm and Thursday from 8:00am to 9:00am in B Block. Teachers are on hand to assist students with any concerns they may have.

Tutoring for Junior students is held in B1 and Senior students go to B3/4. Tutoring begins on the second week of each term and concludes the week prior to each Year level assessment week at the end of each term.
